PRINTMAKING SURGE

There is still a lot of printmaking activity going on until the end of the year.

HERSTORY

Julianna Kirwin lead the HERSTORY Printmaking Collective to create images of Albuquerque women, and wheat paste them all over Albuquerque -- ALBUQUERQUE'S FAVORITE WOMEN:

There is an opening for the project on Thursday, December 4th, 2025, 5-7 PM, at Bow and Arrow Brewery (608 McKnight NW, Albuquerque):

Julianna Kirwin organized this specific project, seen below standing in front of one of the wheat pasted woman's portraits on the GIZMO Building:

The Herstory project was funded by a previous FULCRUM FUND grant:

I went to one of Julianna's bandana workshops on November 8, 2025, to print some of our EXQUISITE TESSELLATION linocuts:

Joe Marshall met Julianna when she visited his Heart of the Sun gallery in Tucson on July 2025:

During the OPEN STUDIO Tour 2025 in Tucson, Joe Marshall encouraged visitors to make a quick print with the stiff foam tessellation tiles, like he did when he visited Albuquerque in June 2025:

STEAMROLLER AFTERMATH
LAS CRUCES

Chris Bardey of Las Cruces, New Mexico, retrieved three of the big steamroller prints during the Southwest Print Fiesta 2025 when he passed through Silver City again:

He kept two for exhibition, and dropped one off with Joe Marshall in Tucson:

OPEN PRINT EXCHANGE

My mini-print in the OPEN PRINT EXCHANGE has been shown four times so far, in the ongoing series of exhibitions:

The University of New Mexico Printmaking Department is having a student print sale at the UNM campus on December 4th, 5th (10 AM - 4 PM), and 6th (11 AM - 3 PM):

TECHNIQUE

I'm enthused to try more printmaking techniques.

I still have not been able to use my tessellation die to cut "hat" shapes out of linoleum and stiff foam:

The "hat" tessellation die

However perhaps with a leather press I could do such, on location:

And perhaps we could even use this leather press to make prints, if we use a soft yoga mat to cushion the pressure.

Also I would like to laser cut images into silk screens, to print paper and t-shirts.  This apparently is possible if we use emulsion on a metal mesh screen, as the CO2 laser will not cut metal.  However the laser should cut the emulsion away:

The trick might be reclaiming the screens, to etch and make more prints.  We could probably use the regular emulsion remover, if that doesn't corrode the metal.  In the past we have reclaimed the screens with Clorox.

We could probably just cut away all the emulsion, either with a blow torch or on the laser cutter.  We could also perhaps just recoat the screen, covering the holes.

Someone has already laser cut images, after coating the metal silk screen with guacamole.  The avocado works like the emulsion, as the fruit is related to latex:

Making your own silk screen frames from PVC pipes -- can we also do this with metal mesh screens:

OPPORTUNITIES

Axle Contemporary is soliciting entries for their BROADSIDES+INSTALLATION project -- pasting artwork on their mobile art van in Santa Fe in 2026:

Remarque Print Workshop in Albuquerque is soliciting for their annual print exchange, 8 x 10 inch edition, 11 prints, $35 fee. Deadline to apply is December 14, 2025:
