AI Art Review

AI (artificial intelligence) seems to improve my drawings:

My AI art in a gallery nowhere,

I discovered two online AI programs that add color to my drawings -- PAINTSCHAINER and Google's DEEP DREAM GENERATOR.   Since 2017 I have been experimenting extensively with these programs, and posting the results, as well as discussion, on this blog. Then this past summer we made a serigraph print edition in Mexico City, by one of my drawings that was enhanced with Deep Dream Generator.

THE PROCESS

I have been uploading my scanned drawings into Deep Dream Generator (an online program from Google, free when signed up with a Gmail account), and then blending the result with the original in Photoshop (in Layers, varying Opacity), to get a good image.

MY BEST AI ASSISTED DRAWINGS
 OF 2019

I posted my best AI altered drawings of 2019 on my blog, in two parts:
Examples below:

THE AI PROGRAMS

I first backed into PaintsChainer, looking for a quick solution to color my drawings on Google.  Once I realized that this was an AI program, I searched for more artificial intelligence programs online, and discovered Google's Deep Dream Generator.

Colored and edited in Paintschainer,

after applying the "style and color" of a different image,

Deep Dream Generator is more sophisticated than Paintschainer, as it adds more than color to my drawings.  It transfers the "style" of a particular image, to one of my drawings (most other people alter photographs).

SERIGRAPH PRINT
From AI assisted Drawing

In August 2019 we made a serigraph edition of one of my drawings in Mexico City, altered by Deep Dream Generator, at Taller 75 Grados.  We used Let's Enhance AI software to increase the resolution (though waifu2x might work just as well, and it's free), so that the enlarged print would not look pixelated.

All the necessary files were posted on my blog before we went down to Mexico City.  Then in the studio, Manuel Guerra drew an Aztec halo around the figure, which was added to the print in green.  The end result was an artistic collaboration between me and Manuel Guerra.

I wrote to Deep Dream Generator about our serigraph, assisted with their AI program, and they posted our story on their Facebook page, on November 16th, 2019.

PRINT OUT

I printed out one of the AI drawings at QueLab hackerspace in Albuquerque, on December 29, 2019.  I first enhanced the resolution with the online program waifu2x (twice, until I got 2272 x 2536 pixel resolution), before sending it to the HP printer.

MY BOOK

I can now color and warp the drawings in my book, as all of them are posted online, and available online in high resolution (for anyone to do what they want with them -- I put them in Public Domain).

OTHER RESOURCES

OTHER DIGITAL DRAWING PROJECTS

AUGMENTED REALITY

Besides AI, I have used AR (Augmented Reality) to enhance my drawing.  Augment El Paso enhanced three prints of the Desert Triangle Print Carpeta, and mine was one of them.

Just for fun, I altered the print with AI (artificial intelligence) slightly, blended it with the original in Photoshop, and the AR (augmented reality) still worked -- admittedly the image below is only altered slightly.

DIGITAL SCULPTURE COLLABORATION

I am anxious to see AI applied to 3D digital artwork (upcoming software?), and printed on the 3D printer.

Previously I produced a digital sculpture collaboration based on one of my drawings, and blogged about it in two parts -- PART 1 and PART 2.

ONLINE COMPUTER PROGRAMS LIST

This is a link to a list of the online computer programs I have found over the years.

I am enthused about using all the tools of the 21st Century for making art.

UPDATE (February 2020):  AI in 3D -- There is artificial intelligence style transfer (like Deep Dream Generator) to 3D objects, as shown in the video below.  Note that the code is posted on GitHub.

INDEX

Update (April 17, 2020):  There is a live streaming AI heavy metal channel on YouTube (since September 4, 2019)..  And previous there was an AI streaming free jazz from Voyager 3, which never existed.
