3D with AI in 2025


3D ART 2025

We employed various strategies to generate 3D ART in 2025:


HUNYUAN 3D from China (Tencent) came out about January 25, 2025:
TRELLIS from Microsoft:

META now converts a 2D image into 3D, from a single image or from many within a scene -- with an online program SEGMENT ANYTHING:

In May I got Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview 05-06 to interpret one of my abstract drawings into a 3D Three.js Animation:

OPENSCAD

As of March 25, 2025 --  Google would generate OpenScad code in GEMINI 2.5 -- turning 2D images into 3D objects: *

However as of November 18, 2025 -- GEMINI 3 generated BETTER OpenScad code to make even better 3D objects:

"CHATTING" with BLENDER

I used an MCP agent in Claude Desktop to just "chat" with BLENDER to make an animation:

AUGMENTED REALITY


LINOCUT  AR


I enhanced an EXQUISITE TESSELLATION print by Lisa Casaus, by slipping an NFC tag in the frame that went online to an Augmented Reality roadrunner.  Viewers just had to hoover their smartphones over the print to conjure up the roadrunner in 3D:


I generated a 2D roadrunner in Midjourney, turned it into 3D with TRELLIS, converted that into Augmented Reality, and Adric linked that to an NFC tag -- which we put on the frame holding Lisa's linocut print at Quelab.

AR EXHIBITION

I would like to have an AR Print exhibition -- offering multiple AR experiences.  Ideally the each print would act as a "target," which activates an individual Augmented Reality 3D object, when one hoovers their phone over the print.  The viewers would have to go to one website to initiate the AR (from an NFC tag or QR code), but I do not want them to have to download an app.

LENTICULAR PRINTS

Lenticular displays can give the illusion of space if they feature different 3D views, though most offer the illusion of time.

Adric first ordered 2 IMAGE lenticular cards from Walgreens, which we cut down to business card size.  We added the AI Javelina that I generated and animated in Midjourney:

Then Adric ordered a 3 IMAGE lenticular business cards directly from ACTION PICTURES. We added one of my portrait drawings that I animated in Midjourney:

LOOKING GLASS HOLOGRAMS

In April Adric set up a LOOKING GLASS GO FRAME at Quelab that displays 3D images digitally (with a lenticular cover).  Members can upload 2D images via Wi-Fi, which are converted into 3D and uploaded to the holographic display frame:

OTHER 3D

HACKADAY claims to TURN YOUR SMARTPHONE into a POV HOLOGRAM DISPLAY, so Ally 3D printed one out and we tried it:
