Rented studio space in Juarez

October 23,2008
Lightweight door makes a good easel in Studio Juarez,
propped up on a plastic container.
The loose canvas scroll is suspended from plastic door hooks
(which attach to the top of the door).
The canvas was gessoed with the yellow spreader shown at the left bottom,
smoother and easier than priming with a brush.
Also note the arrow leaning at the bottom right of the canvas scroll.
The hollow carbon arrow makes a good brush extension.
In this case a brass charcoal holder fits
at the open top end of the arrow,
so that I can draw on the door easel from a distance.

Tried to paint in Slaton, Texas,
 "the Marfa of the North."
I unfolded my portable door easel (that I had made in Juarez)
and leaned it up against my Honda,
on a spongy blanket protecting the car.
However the wind kept blowing the canvas scroll hanging
from plastic top hooks, so I didn't draw.

The custom made door easel was cut in half,
so it folds in two,
in order to fit in the back of the Honda Fit.
Also there are compartments in the back of the door,
where art supplies are stored, attached by Velcro.
Easel also has cloth handles,
 for carrying like a suitcase.

Portable studio fits in a baseball bat backpack --

I ran a one time drawing session
at the Hush Bar/Gallery in the basement,
in downtown El Paso
on Monday, 080512, 6-9PM.
This was the first time I used my "low rider "easel set-up,
custom made by a carpenter in Juarez.
The easel is a Japanese design,
the stool rises only 8 inches high off the ground
and collapses flat entirely,
and the board folds in two,
held together by duct tape.
The whole drawing set-up fits in what is essentially a guitar case,
and thus is easy to transport back and forth
across the El Paso-Juarez border.

I'm renting a shared space in South Austin,
Texas for a month, at the Austin Figurative Gallery.
