I uploaded my 3D figure drawing to be viewed in Augmented Reality with an iPhone using the Adobe Aero app (see this YouTube for an explanation).
Then we placed my figure drawing in the Sculpture Garden at the Albuquerque Museum:

I downloaded the Adobe Aero beta version desktop software (download link), to upload my 3D drawing from March 9th and create a scene. Then I exported that scene to the Adobe archive so that people can access my augmented reality drawing to view in the Adobe Aero app (for Apple devices only).

We tried this before 10 years ago, using GPS to place my Augmented Reality sculpture in the Albuquerque Museum, but the technology was not able to do that yet:
- Maybe I can alert viewers to the existence and locations of my Augmented Reality sculptures with iBeacons -- not quite like this beacon art gallery experience.
- We played with programmable beacon tags once, like these
There are other Augmented Reality Sculpture Gardens:
- Gardens of the Anthropocene by Tamiko Thiel
- Anton Bakker at the National Museum of Mathematics in Washington DC, and "Global Sculpture Park" in Norfolk, Virginia (video)
- Smithsonian Magazine article
Maybe we should also "Augment Bomb" the Tucson Sculpture Park.

- Apparently the new iPhones (iOS 13) and Android 7 devices even have built in Augmented Reality viewing capabilities -- that is, without downloading an app!
- The AR Viewer app allows one to upload and view their own figures in Augmented Reality. Requires "Android 7" operating system (or iOS 13 for Apple devices). Their website says that you can import models from Google Drive, Dropbox, or other Cloud services.
Other AUGMENTED REALITY
Applications
The next step is to make one's own Augmented Reality masks:
- Lens Studio apparently has software that allows users to make their own augmented reality experiences for Snapchat (which can also be used in Zoom).
- YouTube tutorial: Lens Studio Tutorial: How To Start For Beginners
- Spark AR has software that allows users to make their own augmented reality experiences on Instagram and Facebook.

MY CREATION PROCESS
- I first drew the figure from a live model in Paint 3D, the free art program that comes with Windows 10. I really like this program. It will download a GLB file, which is in a 3D format.
- I can then upload that GLB file and alter than figure in Blender, the free 3D software available online for download.
- I decimated the 3D figure above in InstantMeshes so that it would be small enough to use in Augmented Reality apps.
- I posted the decimated figure online for download-- 210309__03__figure.glb (228 Kb) in my GDrive.
- I uploaded that GLB figure to the Adobe Aero desktop beta software (download software here) to create and upload the Augmented Reality file. Then the Adobe Aero app will upload my figure and place it into the real world with Augmented Reality.

DESERT TRIANGLE
AUGMENTED REALITY
Augment El Paso enhanced three prints for the Desert Triangle Print Carpeta project in 2015. One of those Augmented Reality prints is currently in the ¡Printing the Revolution! exhibition at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
Below is a YouTube playlist of the three Augmented Reality prints:
SUMMARY
My Android tablet is too old to use all the new Augmented Reality apps. Nor do I have an iPhone to use the Adobe Aero app to view my figure in Augmented Reality. Furthermore, it does not look like there is a good cross-platform way for all devices to view the same Augmented Reality experience.
Moreover it looks like Snapchat and Facebook have different Augment Reality overlays that are proprietary, and do not work outside those apps, even on the same device.
Therefore we may not quite be there with Augmented Reality -- yet. But there might be bigger things on the horizon like the Microsoft Hololens 2.
- Note: I posted seven 3D figures in GLB format for download as a zip file -- 210316_GLB_gestures.zip (5 MB) -- which could be used to create other Augmented Reality scenes. These are my gesture drawings from March, 16, 2021.
