QUICK CARVE event -- coming September 14th, 2024

We are preparing for a "QUICK CARVE/CARVE IT" event at HECHO A MANO  -- voted Best Gallery in Santa Fe -- the evening of September 14th, 2024.

"Carve It" event
at Hecho A Mano gallery on September 14, 2024

Julie Sola will be running the event.  She runs FAT CROW PRESS in Las Vegas, New Mexico, and previously worked in at the famous HATCH SHOW PRESS in Nashville.

EXQUSITE TESSELLATION

8 to12 artists will be carving live, and we intend to make a large EXQUISITE TESSELLATION collaboration print from their tiles, on Kitakata paperThis is a variation on the Exquisite Corpse, a surrealism collaborative exercise:

We will be hand printing the tessellation prints

We are using the "hat" shaped tessellation shapes -- the solution to the "Ein Stein" problem -- which were only discovered by David Smith in late 2022.  This video below gives some background on this unusual shape:

We will also print individual "hat" tessellation tiles from the artists on 8x8 inch paper, using the SIZZIX Big Shot Press:

ROUND LINOCUTS

The artists also have 4 inch diameter linoleum discs to carve -- plus the 6x6 inch "square donut" frame outside the discs:

The printmakers can carve both a disc
and the "square donut" frame
to make two color prints

The linoleum was cut in Albuquerque
on the laser cutter at Quelab makerspace

When the artists carve both the disc and the outside frame, we can ink them up in different colors and make two-colored puzzle prints on the SIZZIX press.  Originally this was Virgil Velasco's idea:

Virgil Velasco's two color print

As the pieces were cut on a laser cutter at Quelab makerspace, they are all the same sizes.  Therefore the carved disc from one artist will fit in the carved "square donut" frame by a different artist, to make a two-artist collaboration print -- such as this print below by Xavier Moreno of Guadalajara and Ellie Weadock of Albuquerque:

The 4 inch diameter round linocuts are "street taco-sized," and can easily be printed on a real Tortilla Press:

NOTE: Xavier Moreno is part of Tres Gatos Press in Guadalajara, Mexico -- who taught us how to print on a Tortilla Press:

This QUICK CARVE event is run by Frank Rose, the owner of HECHO A MANO gallery -- which was voted the BEST GALLERY in SANTA FE in 2024.

As Julie Sola is coming from Las Vegas, and Karl Whitaker is coming from Albuquerque -- Las Vegas/Santa Fe/Albuquerque will all converge poetically at this event.
