Tony Ryder 2019 -- long demo

The following tracks the drawing progress of the long demo by Anthony Ryder, during the 2 week workshop he conducted from June 10th to June 21st:

FIRST WEEK

The long demo started on June 12th, Wednesday:

Staring by drawing "the envelop"
with a 3B pencil

Looking for general angles
within "the envelop"

No parallel sides

Looking for a "flow" of the shapes
all together

June 13, Thursday:
The shapes in the figure should ultimately be "convex"
(even if there are some more general
concave bends in the gesture curve)

June 14, Friday:

At some point Anthony switched to a 6B pencil

SECOND WEEK

June 17, Monday:

The second week started with a demo drawing of the shadows.

There are two main kinds of shadows -- the Form Shadow and the Cast Shadow.

FORM SHADOW

The Form Shadow splits the form at the plane curves -- with a "terminator" shadow"  -- the darkest shadow on the form.  From the "terminator" shadow emerges the "dark light" and the "reflected light."

The "dark light" is the delicate shading towards the light source from the terminator.

The "reflected light" is the shading away from the terminator, which is dark but lightens up, from the light reflected from surrounding surfaces.

THE CAST SHADOW

The "cast shadow" is the made by a form blocking the light source.  The edges tend to be sharper than the terminator.  The cast shadow has a double edge, due to the umbra and the penumbra (because the light source has a width, it is not a pin hole source).

When the cast shadow is close to the form that creates it, the cast shadow edge is sharp.  When the cast shadow is further from the form that eclipses the light, the edge is fuzzy, and can have a width (and of course will have a lighter tone)

HALO SHADOW

There is a subtle shadow touch where the umbra meets the penumbra.  Outside the umbra, into the penumbra, there is a darker line.

Immediately inside the umbra shadow, just on the other side of the penumbra, is a lighter line.

Hopefully I did not misunderstand this subtlety.
