Art Pile Up

February started off with a big bang, with lots of art exhibitions and activities.

JANUARY 30th

UTEP Faculty Exhibition
El Paso

Manuel Guerra showed his painting collaborations with Francisco Delgado at the UTEP Department of Art Biennial Faculty Exhibition at the Rubin Center in El Paso.  I have been working with Manuel Guerra on the Ambos Lados International Print Exchange.

FEBRUARY 1st

Atelier Dojo
Austin

Austin has a new classical drawing studio at Canopy called Atelier Dojo, and I enjoyed drawing the model there during the morning drop in session.

Print Austin Print Expo

Print Austin was happening, and I went to their main event -- the PrintEXPO -- where all the printmakers had vending booths (and I bought prints,of course).

Tuesday Night Muse Exhibition
Santa Fe

John Tollett had an exhibition of his drawings at A Gallery Somewhere in Santa Fe.  From the pictures he had a great reception, though I was in Austin and will have to go at another time.

was debuted at his exhibition

FEBRUARY 2nd

Mexic-Arte Museum
Austin

One of my print collaborations, with a Mexican printmaker (Skinpop/Raul Urias) was hanging at the Mexic-Arte Museum in downtown Austin -- in the "Unseen Prints from the Mexic-Arte Collection" exhibition.

A lot of other prints that we left two years ago, during our Desert Triangle exhibition, were also on display in the"Unseen Prints" exhibition, in addition to my print collaboration.

FEBRUARY 3rd

Coronado Print Studio
Austin

I also visited the new Coronado Print Studio, located adjacent to the new Flatbed Press location.  Pepe Coronado was showing the Grafica America print portfolio, organized by the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach, California.  This was one of the exhibitions for the Print Austin events.

FEBRUARY 7TH

Dennis Liberty
Albuquerque

Dennis Liberty had an exhibition at The Gallery ABQ at Hoffmantown Center.

The People's Show
Albuquerque

For $15 anyone could enter work in the 11th Annual People's Art Show at Factory on 5th, so I did.

FEBRUARY 8TH

Live Printmaking Demos
Taos

As part of the Ambos Lados International Print Exchange exhibition and events, there was a live printmaking demo scheduled in the Encore Gallery at the Taos Center for the Arts, and I went.

Sarah Hart
Taos

Next door at the Stables Gallery, Sarah Hart was having her printmaking opening, where she showed her large steamroller print from the 3rd Annual Southwest Print Fiesta in Silver City in 2018.  She was also part of the Live Printmaking Demo at the Encore Gallery.

The Press Club
Albuquerque

Barbara Endicott and Marian Berg had a painting show at The Albuquerque Press Club, and I made it back for the opening.

DRAWING INSPIRATIONS
Book

The new book of figure drawings from the 3rd Street Arts group in Albuquerque has now been published -- Drawing Inspirations.  Of course, I have drawings in it.

Granom

Homero Gomez Gonzalez was assassinated in January in Ocampo, Michoacan, apparently for being a Monarch Butterfly activist.  NPR covered that story in the US.

Granom created a special poster dedicated to Homero Gomez Gonzales, and uploaded the design to Dropbox, encouraging others to download and print it out. They put this poster in the Public Domain. So I printed it out at QueLab hackerspace in Albuquerque.

Juarez

Also, shortly after Homero's assignation, Isabel Cabanillas de la Torre was senselessly shot in Ciudad Juarez, just across the river from El Paso. Protests broke out in both Juarez and El Paso.  She was an artist and friend to some of the printmakers we know.

Jorge Perez at Panaderia Rezizte, and Puro Borde, had a benefit on January 31st, in Juarez, for Isabel Cabanillas. The sold donated prints and did live printmaking to raise money.

CHICANO PRINTS
COMING TO THE SMITHSONIAN

The Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington DC, will exhibit Mexican-American prints in September -- ¡Printing the Revolution! The Rise and Impact of Chicano Graphics, 1965 to NowThe opening is on September 11, 2020.

This looks like a great exhibition, and hopefully it will travel so I will get to see it.  While I know a few of the artists, I do notice that none mentioned are from the Southwest Mountain Time Zone.  Perhaps the Desert Triangle needs to answer this will an exhibition in El Paso, opening on September 16th, 2020
